Complete newbie question
Sep 21 2008, 2:23 AM EDT | Post edited: Sep 21 2008, 2:23 AM EDT
I installed Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 (via VMWare Fusion 2) on my iMac two days ago, and ran the LiveCD version on an old Dell laptop for the first time this morning (Oz time). So you can't get a newer Linux/Ubuntu newbie than that.

I went looking for a dock application to install on the program as I like it on OS X. I came across AWN, and found how to install it (sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator) which located it and installed, and it now appears in the Applications > Accessories list. However, when I run it, a small window appears for about 0.1 sec and disappears. No dock.

I think it may be because I've not installed a compositing manager (not even sure what that is, yet). Nor do I know how to see if "my X-installation has the Composite extension enabled" (and I don't know what that means, either). I obviously need guidance.

One thing to note, VMWare Fusion doesn't support OpenGL, so that would seem to rule out the Beryl/Compiz Composite.

My simple question: how do I get the AWN dock to show?

Thanks
