Add ability to group icons. You could switch between entrys in a group by using the scrollwheel over an icon. In this case the current icon would change to the next in the group (would be a good idea for window-groups for gimp or glade2 too)

Have a clear separator between launchers and windows.
Have launcher/window separator bar disappear when nothing is on the other side of it.
Tooltips should be "on top" of everything - at the moment, the dock is always on top, but windows near it cover up the app name when I hover.

Stable Release Download

Type all of the text in fixed-width font into your terminal (Applications > Acessories > Terminal)

First download the .tar.gz from here and put it into your home directory.

Untar:

tar -zxvf avant-window-navigator-0.1.1-2.tar.gz

But make sure the file name matches the file you downloaded. You can type just the first few letters of the file name and press [Tab] to complete the rest.

Install all of the dependencies:

sudo apt-get installbuild-essential libgtk2.0-dev libwnck-dev libwnck-common libgconf2-dev libglib2.0-dev

Go to the source directory

cd avant-window-navigator-0.1.1/

Prepare for installation:

./configure

Compile:

make

Install:

sudo make install

Now that it is installed, type the following to run it:

avant-window-navigator &

Step 1: Prepare your system

sudo apt-get install build-essential bzr automake1.9 autotools-dev

Step 2: Download the required dependencies

Step 3: Download Avant Window Navigator from Bazaar:

bzr co http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~awn-core/awn/trunk avant-window-navigator

Step 4:

cd avant-window-navigator
./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install

Step 7: Run Avant Window Navigator

Alt-F2
avant-window-navigator

Step 8: Have Avant Window Navigator automatically start up on reboot

Click System, Control Center
Click Sessions
Click Startup Sessions Tab
Click "New" and type "avant-window-navigator" in both name and command fields
Click "OK"
Click "Close"

Ubuntu Feisty Repository

If you are running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04, you can install AWN and Affinity from an Ubuntu repository.

First, edit your apt sources: gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add these lines to the bottom:

## Avant Window Navigator
deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/ feisty avant-window-navigator
deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/ feisty avant-window-navigator

Then do this in a terminal:

wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42/8434D43A.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Now to install the stable AWN version do

NOTICE: No stable AWN at this time. It will be added at the next release

For AWN BZR do:

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator-bzr

You can install more applets for AWN by doing:

sudo apt-get install awn-core-applets-bzr

The Affinity in this repo requires Tracker to work properly:

sudo apt-get install tracker

For the stable Affinity version do

sudo apt-get install affinity

Or for Affinity SVN do:

sudo apt-get install affinity-svn

Please note that all of the following is intended to work for BZR not "Stable". If you are still using "Stable", please upgrade. BZR is more stable and has better features to book.

How do I start AWN?

Find it under your menus (In Ubuntu, its Applications > Accessories > Avant Window Navigator) or type avant-window-navigator & at the terminal prompt.

There's a big ugly black bar around AWN! How do I get rid of it?

You need to be running a compositor like Beryl or Compiz.

How do I access the preferences for awn?

Right-click either end of the bar and choose "Preferences" or type awn-manager & at the terminal.

How do I close awn?

Right-click either end of the bar and choose "Close" or type
killall -u $USER avant-window-navigator at the terminal.

How do I add launchers to the bar?

Just drag and drop! You can also select "Add" in the Launchers menu of AWN-Manager.

A note, however: this may, in some cases, not work. In that case, launch gconf-editor & from run (Alt+F2) or from the terminal. Change the key in
/apps/avant-window-navigator/window_manager/launchers
to include a reference to your launcher.

How do I change the order of my launchers?

Right click either end of the bar and select "Preferences" to open AWN-Manager. From there, select "Launchers" on the left hand menu. You can drag and drop there in order to rearrange your launchers.

How Can I make AWN run at start up?

In Ubuntu, goto System > Preferences > Sessions and add a new entry for the command 'avant-window-navigator'

How Can I test Fading Icons feature?

Open the preferences window (see above). From there, on the first tab, you should see "Fade effect (experimental)". Make sure that that's checked. A note, however: this is an experimental feature. It has many bugs, and may not work as intended. You have been warned.

How do I make AWN look like the LG3D or Leopard Dock?

This feature is now accessible through the GUI. Right click on the bar and select "Preferences" from the context menu in order to open AWN-Manager. Click on the "Bar Appearance" tab from the "General Preferences" menu, and then select "3d Look" from the "Look" drop down menu.

You are, of course, free to play around to create your own custom look by changing the settings for bar angle, height, and icon offset.

How do I add applets?

Right click either end of the bar and choose "Preferences" to open AWN-Manager. Select "Applets" from the left hand menu. Highlight the applet you wish to add and use the arrows to move it to the active applets list. You may also drag and drop to rearrange you applets in this menu.

AWN ships with the following applets: Trash Applet, Separator, Launcher/Taskmanger, Notification Area, and Workspace Switcher. More applets are currently in development and may be included soon. AWN Main Menu and Stacks applets can be found in AWN-Extras.

How do I install AWN-Extras?

Instructions for installing AWN-Extras from source can be found here.

For those running using Reacocard Ubuntu repo:

sudo apt-get awn-core-applets-bzr

How do I reset AWN's preferences?

In order to reset all of AWN's preferences to their defaults run the following in the terminal:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/avant-window-navigator

This can be useful when you wish to return to AWN's default appearance.

How do I reposition AWN?

By default AWN sits centered on the bottom edge of the screen. The option to reposition it does not currently exist, but it is a planned feature.

How do I apply a patch to AWN?

Applying patches is not recomended for the normal user. Patches are a way for developers to work on new features before commiting them to the core code. By their nature they should be considered very unstable. Instructions for applying patches are available here. A site for developers to post patches for the consideration of the community can be found here.

Applets

Applets are programs which reside on the dock which extend its functionality. They can be added in the Applets menu of the AWN-Manager. A number of applets are already incorporated into AWN with even more in development. AWN-Extras is a project that contains applets for AWN (follow the link for installation instructions).

Currently Availiable

Launcher/Taskmanger

This applet provides the core window navigation functions of AWN and should be enabled by default.

Separator

This is a simple applet with which you may place a separator onto the bar.

Workspace Switcher

Like the name implies, this applet allows you to switch between your workspaces. Right clicking on it and selecting preference will allow you to modify it's appearance.

Notification Area

This applet shows you what programs are running in the system tray.

Currently Being Tested

Gnome Main Menu

This applet allows you to access the Gnome Main Menu from AWN.

Affinity

This applet allows you to acces Affinity, a beautiful search tool authored by the creater of AWN, directly from the dock.

In Development

Some very exciting new applets are currently in development including a clock, a system monitor, a stacks-like folder system, and Topaz-like pop-ups.

Fedora 7 Repository

The following are instructions for installing AWN fromKirov-sama's Fedora 7 repo. More information can be found inthis forum post.

Uninstall any other version of AWN:

sudo rpm -e avant-window-navigator

Next install the repo file:

cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
sudo wget http://www.csc.calpoly.edu/~admiller/repo/pub/kirov.repo

Now import the GPG key:

sudo rpm --import http://www.csc.calpoly.edu/~admiller/repo/pub/RPM-GPG-KEY-Kirov

And finally install AWN:

sudo yum install avant-window-navigator

openSUSE

To install the SVN version in Fedora Core 6 this is what I had to do (thrown together from the forum etc):

su -c "yum -y install bzr intltool libwnck-devel libtool automake autoconf gnome-desktop-devel libgnome-devel gnome-vfs2-devel dbus-glib-devel autoconf gnome-common"
bzr co http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~awn-core/awn/trunk avant-window-navigator
cd avant-window-navigator
./autogen.sh
make
su -c "make install"

I hope it was OK to add this page; it took me a while to track down all the deps I needed and I thought this might save some other people a bit of trouble :D
